Full Description

A round cairn at Bad Chalda, Ardvreck east of Loch Assynt.

Cairn C.7m in diameter. Heather covered low mound with central depression. Stones most obvious on East and West edges, mostly quartzite with some limestone.

Historic Assynt visited this site in March 2015.

A low heather covered mound as previously recorded but 10m rather than 7m in diameter and with a shallow hollow approximately in the centre, which might indicate a collapsed chamber. The cairn appears to be constructed of water worn quartzite stones which protrude from the heather around the edges. Built high on an east/southeast facing slope there is thus more cairn material on the east side and it would have looked larger when viewed from the valley below. There are suggestions of horns spreading east and south and a possible forecourt in between, but without excavation it is impossible to tell whether these are natural or built features. <1>

The cairn was proposed for scheduling by Historic Environment Scotland in 2018 as part of their NorthWest Cairns Project. The scheduling came into effect as of 29/08/2018. <2>

The GIS spatial data waas amended in 2019 according to the location of the feature as seen on 2009 vertical Aps. <2>
