Full Description
A corn drying kiln at Achnacly near Broubster.
A rapid walkover survey was carried out by J Wordsworth in 2000 on a piece of ground planned for Christmas trees near Broubster, Caithness. A corn-drying kiln at ND 0473 5958 was the only significant feature noted. However, given the density of Neolithic and later prehistoric monuments, it is likely significant remains may be buried under the peat. In the NE corner of the survey area 16m W of the burn and 40m south of the north boundary are the remains of a corn-drying kiln. It measures c8m by 3m with the central bowl measuring c3m wide by 1.2m deep. The kiln was fed by a flue facing south. External to the kiln structure at the N is a line of stones suggesting the kiln may have been contained within a kiln barn. This would have protected the kiln from extreme weather. <1>
The site was identified as a possible kiln structure in LiDAR data gathered by AOC Archaeology in 2011 as part of the mitigation for the visual impact on the archaeological landscape associated with the proposed Baillie Hill windfarm, Caithness. Possible kiln structure, 9m by 5m oriented NNW/SSE. <2>
