The discovery of a chambered cairn was reported, in 1850, to The Inverness Courier in a letter by Thomas Duncan of Muirhead. The discovery was made as far back as 1833, when a labourer began to dig out stones for a building on Muirhead farm. A number of possible chambers, with numerous bones including a human skull, were found within the cairn. Finds, identified as a stone battle-axe and a piece of jet were also found within one of the chambers.
