NM66SE 16 685 640
------
A corn-drying kiln is situated close to the northern edge of the coniferous plantation W of Salen, c.150m E of the track through the forest. It consists of an overgrown circular structure, 4.70m in diameter NE-SW externally by 4.40m NW-SE, and 0.60m high. The kiln bowl, presumably revetted but now very overgrown and filled with rubble, measures 2m in diameter NE-SW by 1.90m NW-SE. The flue, c. 0.30m wide, can be seen issuing outside in the SE sector. A turf bank runs southwards from the kiln into the forestry plantation.
The kiln was presumably associated with Tarbert township (SMR NM66SE0001), though it is some distance from the main focus of settlement.

------
Reconnaissance work in connection with the Millennium-funded Sunart Oakwood Project resulted in the discovery of a number of sites on adjoining estates.
NM 685 640 Corn kiln, part of the deserted settlement of Tarbert.
Research into the history of the oakwoods is ongoing. Oak trees derived from maiden stems, singled coppice and multi-stemmed neglected coppice occur throughout the woodlands. Very occasional senile pollarded trees suggest an earlier woodland management regime, possibly dating from the late medieval period.
