Full Description

NM 985 678 A rapid survey in advance of forestry plantation found no trace of the settlement of Dauge (or Douge) recorded on Roy's Military Survey, though extensive rig cultivation did survive. The extents of an area of rig cultivation were mapped along the N-facing slope of Glen Scaddle by J Wordsworth during a pre-afforestation survey. <1>

Site 3: Extending nearly 400m N/S by c300m E/W are intermittent patches of rig. Many of these are ill-defined due to the growth of bracken and other vegetation and are best defined from the air or low-light conditions. The rigs extend N of the later dyked enclosure. They were clearly part of the former settlement at Dauge/Douge (transcription uncertain). A single clearance cairn is visible at the SW of this area at C NM 978 677 measuring c5m in diameter. This may just be a clearance cairn, though no similar cairns were observed and it may be the remains of a small store. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 1999-2001 vertical aerial photographs. <3>

Note; The eastings in the Aryhoulan WGS report are incorrect (TB 18/8/25)
