Across the upper end of the river which flows the short distance from Loch Garvie to Garvie Bay there are the remains of a stone-built weir. This is depicted on Peter May's 1758 survey of the Barony of Coigach (SRO, RHP 85395), which has the following annotation written across the bay: 'this water is called Garvie upon which there is a creave fishing for salmon'.
