Full Description
The Military Road Survey (Logie 1997) shows the road running directly from the bridge to NH 8676 2210, where it joins the current estate/Sustrans route. However, another section of road is visible on the ground running west from this point - roughly parallel to the current route but downslope and taking a less steep route. This is vegetation-covered and flanked by a bank onits northern side; it may be the original military road (deviating from the 1997 survey report). Due to the gradient and erosion on the current route, Sustrans may propose to reroute to this alignment. As they would only build-up the original surface, no damage to the putative military road should occur. The 1997 report does not mention multiple routes and it is not clear what date the current alignment from Sluggan Bridge was adopted. The route was upgarded and adopted by Sustrans in 1999 - it is not clear if there was any consulatation at that stage.
(KC 03/2005)
Ann Wakeling notes two roads running down to Sluggan Bridge, running roughly parallel and meeting at NH 8645 2205.
