Full Description

Remains of a building near Torrandhu Bridge.

An unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire and Cromartyshire 1881, sheet xlix) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1966).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 20 February 1996

Trial trenching of the site was carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2025. The works were carried out as advance works on behalf of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) in respect to the LT14 Western Isles: Mainland Cable Route. Three trenches were hand dug through the north and south walls, and through the east gable end. The western end of the structure was no longer extant. Excavation revealed the walls to be built from turf and stone, and showed possible signs of repair and partial rebuilding. The initial turf wall appeared to have been built over the original ground surface and were then raised or rebuilt with up to two courses of stonework. This was followed by further repairs and partial rebuilding with turf layers and stonework. A possible cobbled floor surface was also once present as evidenced by a small surviving portion near the centre of the building. No other internal features were uncovered within the trenches. The building was believed to be post-medieval in date and was deemed to be of low significance given its relatively poor and incomplete state of survival. <1>
