ARCHITECT: Alexander Ross (I.A. 1 May 1874)

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.

The development of Torridon House and grounds was by Duncan Darroch, and took place between the 1871 and 1881 censuses. The house was designed by the architect Alexander Ross in 1874. By 1881 there were 3 houses - for the gamekeeper, the gardener and the coachman as well as the mansion house, with its laundry maid, kitchen maid and others. In 1891 Duncan Darroch and his family are recorded as living at Torridon House along with an English teacher and lady's maid, laundry maid, 3 housemaids, a kitchen maid, scullery maid and footman. The stableyard had rooms above where the piper and his family stayed. There was also the coachman's house, the gardener's house and the entrance lodge where the house steward stayed. The gamekeeper and the boatman had houses on the west side of the river at Park (W Corry). By the 1902 OS map the Boathouse Lodge had been built towards the Entrance Lodge and the Kennels and Church had been built to the west of the big house. <1>
