Full Description

Large house marked on N side of road, with good gardens to W - on 1st ed OS - HAW 3/2003

Swordale House first shown on OS 1st Edition map.

The architectural practice of Ross and Joass were engaged in 1864 to design dairy buildings for the estate (presumably the former steading complex - see MHG29920) and in 1882 William Cumming Joass was engaged to design a keeper's house and kennels.

The house was purchased by Major Randle Jackson in 1885. The following year he engaged the services of architect Andrew Maitland of Tain to substantially enlarge the house, creating a baronial castle as depicted on the OS 2nd Edition map of 1906. By 1967 most of the additions had been demolished.

Only parts of outer walls now (2016) remain forming a courtyard to the east of the existing, and original, house.
