Full Description

Inverness, Riding School, The Citadel
Architects: Alexander Ross & Son (I.C. March 12, 1909)

Unlocated.

Comparison of historic OS maps between the 2nd and 3rd editions show that the only significant building to have been constructed in this general area was a large building orientated north-south on the west side of Lotland Street adjacent to what was at the time a surviving part of the rampart of the C17 Cromwellian fort. This building measured approx. 47m x 16m. It is, however, unclear how this could have functioned as a riding school. It is unlabelled on all editions of OS mapping until the Epoch 5b 1:1250 map of 1971 when it is labelled 'depot', with a builder's yard to the north. On the two subsequent 1:1250 revisions it is not labelled. At some point between 1992 and 1999-2001 it was demolished as it is not visible on aerial photographs taken at that latter time. The site has since been redeveloped.

GIS spatial data amended in 2018 according to depiction on OS Epoch 5 SIM3: 1,250 map (1992). <1>
