Full Description

Abandoned settlement at Tormsdale.

Longhouse farm (ND 1370 5042) comprising;
A: Longhouse. Dimensions: 12 x 5m. Rectangular structure with an annexe 1.9 x 3.5m at the S end. Orientation N-S.
B: Longhouse. Dimensions: 18.3 x 5m. Tripartite rectangular structure. A small room is also formed by walling within the NW unit. Orientation NW-SE.
C: Longhouse. Dimensions: 22 x 5.9m. Rectangular structure with two small rooms formed by interior walling. It lies 7m from and parallel to B. Orientation NW-SE.
D: Longhouse. Dimensions: 14.3 x 5.1m. Bipartite rectangular structure. The ESE unit contains a fireplace. It lies 45m S of C. Orientation WNW-ESE.

A farmstead comprising five roofed buildings and at least three enclosures is depicted on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xxii). One roofed building, three unroofed buildings and an enclosure are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1963).
