NG 9035 5505 A small township comprising five roofed buildings, one partially roofed building, one unroofed building and three enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1881, sheet xcii). One roofed building and three enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).

NG 904 553 A sheep fank/enclosure is seen from the road. A sunken area, now stone filled, is on the W side. Between the fank and the road are the outlines of two other features. In the sheltered lea of a small hill, facing the modern bungalow, are the footings of a building. Uphill and to the E of this are the outlines of another building.

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden.

To the north of the houses at Newton are four rectangular structures and one smaller enclosure, marked on the 1837 estate map but largely abandoned by the 1902 OS map.
176a That to the NW of the recent housing is aligned W-E with its east end cut into the rising ground of a slight ridge. It measures c14m by c3m over walls c0.6m wide and c0.5m high, with the west end being a possible addition of c5m length included in the overall dimensions.
176b That to the north of the recent housing is aligned W-E with its north wall set into the edge of a ridge. It measures c1 0m by c5m over walls c0.5m thick and c0.4m high, with a possible internal division creating one-third to the left and two-thirds to the right. Immediately south of this long building is another aligned W-E, on the slightly lower ground, with rounded ends, measuring c8m by c3m.
176c Just to the north of these structures are the slight remains of an enclosure c6.5m square defined by quite large boulders sticking through the heather/peat.
176d The structure to the NE of the recent housing is aligned N-S and has rounded ends. It measures c14m by c5.5m over walls spread up to 1m and c0.5m high. The structure has two internal divisions with the areas smallest at the north end to largest at the south end. <1>
