Full Description

Wester Ross Project - Cathy Dagg, 03/04

The present village of Aultbea is centred on the street along the north of the bay, with modern housing on Aird and along the south side of the Allt Beithe to the A835. New development is concentrated along the A835 and Drumchork.

The placename Aultbea now encompasses the former townships of Aultbea, Badfearn, Tighnafaoilinn and Cuilconich. The original township of Aultbea was possibly on the hill slope north of the Allt Beithe where a number of cruck-grooved farmstead buildings, aligned down the slope, survive as substantial ruins, together with enclosures and sections of irregular dykes. The First Edition OS map records a corn mill on the Allt Beithe, but this no longer survives. One possible section of lade was identified.
