Full Description

What may be a township, comprising three roofed buildings, one unroofed T-shaped building, two enclosures and a limekiln is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lxxiii). It is unclear which building or structure is the limekiln.
One roofed and one unroofed building are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1995).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 12 July 1996.

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

Loch an Eilein. In addition to the visitor centre which is 1870s or earlier there are a number of foundations, some of which may relate to the limekiln. The most interesting structure is 17m SE of the kiln, partly overlain by modern track, and comprises a rectangle 37 x up to 16 m wide over walls 22 to 3 m thick. The remains of the east wall have been weathered out and shows as a compact rubble fill with facings; only the tops of the facing stones show for the west wall. The south half is on a knoll, with the first room 45m long, then two dividing walls 2m apart, each 11m thick, followed by a 3.66m room, 3m wall at crest of slope at which remains lose height and are part destroyed. Flanking east side an enclosure 16m wide to within 5m of north end. In front of the visitor centre is a sunken foundation 14 x 5m, apparently in use as a store in 1954, and a pit 14 x 10m. North of the visitor centre are at 30m 12 x 7m rectangle, at 60 m north 8 x 5 m oval and other remains, also a rectangle in the campsite area not measured, followed by the extant bothy. <1>
