Full Description

An enclosure on the bank of the River Oykel is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet c). A small enclosure adjoining a length of wall is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1990).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 22 September 1995

Vertical aerial photography and SEPA LiDAR shows this site to be more complex than indicated on the OS 1st Edition map. A series of smaller stone-dyked enclosures form the core of the complex at NGR 234256 904152 with the vague suggestion of earthwork remains of one or two buildings. A dyke extends from this complex to the south and then east enclosing an area taking in a triangular bend in the River Oykel, next to which lies an area of possible rig remains. A second, apparently less substantial, dyke extends south-southeastwards from a point at NGR 234272 904100 where the first dyke heads eastwards. The enclosure shown on the OS 1st Edition map can be seen as being formed from a third dyke extending northwards from the smaller enclosure complex. A borrow pit has now largely removed the second dyke. <1> <2> <3> <4>
