Full Description

NC21NE 7 2558 1800

A large C-shaped burnt mound is situated beside a small water course draining into the N side of the Allt nan Uamh.
Visited by RCAHMS (DCC) 15 May 1995

Surveyed by the Assynt's Hidden Lives project in November 2009. There is no sign of the burnt mound at the previously-cited NGR. A pile of unstructured stones is visible, but this does not resemble a burnt mound. Further upslope, adjacent to the issue of a small spring/stream a crude platform is apparent, comprising varied stones up to 50cm in length and built to a height of no more than 1m. The platform levels an uneven area of ground forming an visible area of 7m x 6m but may continue below the bracken to the north-west. It is roughly aligned SW-NE and abuts a steep hillside to the north-east. The south-west extent ramps down over a distance of 3m and up to 1m in height. <1>

Historic Assynt visited this site in February 2015.

Burnt Mound as described in HER still evident. Crescent shaped and heather covered standing up to 1.5m high. Central hollow aligned NW-SE opening down to a small burn which runs along the southeast segment of the mound. The whole is 12.5m SW-NE and 10.5m NW-SE. Within area of partially improved grassland close to the footpath to the Bone caves. <2>

Note: NGR originally given as NC 2558 1800 but no evidence of a large burnt mound on any aerial photographs at that location. The Historic Assynt 2015 visit identified a large C-shaped mound at a new location 115m to the west of the original location so NGR adjusted. (T.B. 12/3/25)
