Full Description
NN14SW 1 c.107 431.
Air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 111: 3209-10; 3277-8, flown 1946) show many circular or near circular features in an area centred at NN 107 431. A total of thirty six circular or slightly oval earth platforms were located with mean diameters varying from 8.0m to 14.0m. The platforms have been cut into a west facing slope, the spoil being used to form the platform on the downhill side and retained by a drystone rubble wall.
Excavation at two of these platforms revealed a layer of ash and charcoal just under the turf. It is concluded that these were platforms for charcoal burning associated with the iron smelting furnaces at Glenkinglas and Bonawe at the south end of Loch Etive, and, therefore, of 18th/19th c. origin.
