Architects: Alexander Ross & Son (I.C. Oct. 6, 1911) Additions and alterations
Formerly known as the Inverness poor house, this building was built as a poorhouse between 1859 and 1861 to rehouse ‘inmates’ from the overcrowded Dunbar’s Hospital in Inverness. It was used as the poorhouse between 1859 and 1921, then as Muirfield Hospital 1921-1961, Hilton Hospital 1961-1987 and then converted to flats. It was known as Old Edinburgh Court by 2013, according to a display at the Highland Archives in 2013.
The Highland Archives hold the following information: Minutes 1861-1910, Financial Records 1904-1955, Correspondence 1927-1951, Registers 1861-1991, Patient records and case files c. 1924-c. 1961, Report Books 191-1979, Misc patient records 1899-1947, Registers of official visitors 1928-1970, Property & Equipment 1928-1970, photographs c. 1980s, and misc material from 1963-1975.
Some of the one storey buildings at the back were used within memory (in 2013) by poorhouse residents who cut wood into bundles for firewood, according to Duncan Mackintosh.
According to the Listed Building Report, the architect was William Lawrie of the office of James Matthews. <1>
