Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

Remains of dam, constructed of earth with stone facing. The remains are about 2m high and 7.5m wide, at the widest point. The dam is now cut by Allt Clais An Eich. The western side is 35m long and the eastern side 75m long. The western side abuts the hillside and the remains of wooden planks can be seen embedded in the earth above the dam. The eastern side tapers off towards the River Nethy. The dam was used for logging operations as part of a scheme to build up a head of water for floating timber downstream. It is shown on the 1858 map. <1>
