Full Description

A farmstead, possibly the remains of a larger settlement or township at Forsinain, is shown on the OS 1st Edition map. It consists of a large north-south oriented enclosure which straddles the confluence of the Forsinain Burn with the Halladale River with a small enclosure and possible buildings at its northern end (see MHG64596) near the Forsinain Bridge (see MHG9819), a small cluster of buildings towards the southern end and a second cluster at its extreme southern end (see MHG9821). The OS 1st Edition map shows the enclosure dyke to be more or less continuous on all sides of the river and burn but it has since been obscured or destroyed by forestry plantation for most of its western extent and with a section removed and replaced by later enclosures on its eastern side when the Forsinain Farm was subsequently relocated. Surviving sections of the enclosure dyke are visible in vertical aerial photography. <1> <2> <3>
