Full Description

The grazing ground of this shieling site was the subject of a march dispute in 1835 between Sir Francis Mackenzie of Gairloch and James Stewart Mackenzie of Seaforth (Conan Papers - Gairloch museum). See also NG95NE 3.
An area of Deschampia Caespitosa close to the present road marks a grazing area, at the upper edge of which are the footings of a two-compartment shieling bothy. Internal diameters are c4m by 2m and 1.5m by 2m. The smaller compartment is full of rushes, and has a sunken base. Outside the bothy is a scatter of stones, possibly outlining a milking pen. Downhill of the bothy is a wall delineated by a raised row of heather.
By following the burn uphill, another area of D caespitosa is encountered; at the upper edge of this grazing area is a small milking pen c2m by 2m.

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment was undertaken by J Wordsworth and J Harden at Torridon for the National Trust for Scotland in 1996-2002.

A two-compartment shieling bothy NMI or longhouse WW1 c8m long by c2.5m wide over, walls c0.4m thick. The stone footings survive no more than c0.3m high suggesting this was largely turf walled. It is aligned WSW/ESE on the west side of the Alit Slugach as it emerges onto the extensive grassy flush between it and the Alit Coire an Anmoich. The east part of the structure appears narrower than the other. There is possibly another structure at the NW corner c2m square - a milking pen (MM) or a 'porch' OWL
The grazing ground of this shieling was the subject of a march dispute in 1835 between Sir Hector Mackenzie of Gairloch and James Stewart Mackenzie of Seaforth (MM)(Conan Papers - Gairloch Museum). No structure was marked here in 1837. <2>
