Full Description
Achary. Five buildings shown.
W Roy 1747-55
This township named 'Achary' by Roy is shown immediately to the east of another township labelled 'Dalnahary' (see MHG1272), with both lying either side of a burn that is not named but which on the OS 1st edition map and today is called 'Little River', flowing northwestwards to where it eventually joins the River Thurso. They both lie relatively close (just to the south) to where 'Little River' turns westwards. On the 1st edition map the two settlements which would equate with those shown by Roy are labelled 'Daluacher' on the west and 'Tacher' to the east. However, Roy shows a township or farmstead called ' Taker' further to the south on the east side of the burn. Roy does not show a burn immediately to the south of 'Achary' where today there is the 'Burn of Tacher' but he does show a burn to the south of 'Taker'. On the OS 1st edition map this location has a farmstead called 'Leavad' (see MHG1270) with the burn called 'Burn of Leavad'. There has been a considerable amount of work undertaken to change how and where water flows and is managed in the surrounding landscape so it is possible that today's 'Burn of Tacher' was previously a much more minor watercourse that Roy simply omitted. It is also possible that he misnamed 'Taker' for 'Achary' and then placed 'Taker' at 'Leavad'. It is also possible that the current 'Tacher' was relocated from its location to the south with 'Achary' being renamed and 'Taker' being subsequently renamed to 'Leavad'. Estate Maps may help with sorting out the confusion [IS-L 29/07/2025].
