NC51SW 15 542 142

A linear scatter of structures is located to NE of Shinness Lodge along line of a track. The remains can be divided into at least four clusters of buildings interspersed with rather more scattered amorphous remains.
1. NC 5425 1429 Three rectangular structures adjacent to the track, poorly preserved and in the midst of dense bracken.
2. NC 5418 1429 Located on a slight knoll are a well-defined semicircular enclosure and rectangular foundation. The other remains may be two structures which predate the former.
3. NC 5390 1455 Located on a slight knoll in the midst of rough, boggy ground are the remains of three rectangular buildings, two of which are joined by banks which also enclose the third structure. Rig is visible to the SW of this group. To the E are the remains of a further structure which has almost disappeared beneath peat.
4. NC 5393 1462 Located on the leading edge of a break in slope are the remains of two buildings one of which has a drain in the lower (SSW) portion. Three sides of an enclosure are visible running into the boggy ground to the SW.
5. NC 5399 1443 Situated towards the base of a scarp, above the wetter ground is a well-defined kiln standing up to 1.25m high, with a rectangular footing attached to its SW side.
Other remains consist of amorphous, discontinuous banks and two other structures.

NC 543 181. A township comprising seven unroofed buildings, one of two compartments, three enclosures and a head-dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet lxxxv). Two roofed buildings and the ruins of two unroofed buildings, an enclosure and field walls are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1989).
