(NH 7688 9132) Hut Circle (NR)
OS 6" map, Sutherland, 2nd ed., (1907)

A hut circle, excavated by Alan Rae for the Department of Education in December 1953. It consisted of a circular turf wall, 3' wide, 40' external diameter, enclosing a cobbled floor and a rectangular stone hearth set on a gravel platform. Supporting the roof had been four main posts, each with a subsidiary support: another post related to the hearth. The entrance, in the WNW, had two steps up and may have turned left along a 9' corridor between the wall and a screen based on stones. There were no signs of out- buildings. No dating evidence was found. (2) The hut circle was destroyed by road straightening after the excavation (Information contained in letter and plan from A Rae, Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh to OS, 30 July 1965).
