Full Description

NH79SW 12 7373 9243.

NH 737 924. A cist was observed March 1966 in eroding face of a gravelly knoll, which had been cut by road, and at a depth of one foot below summit, at Rearquhar, Dornoch. Composed of slabs and eke stones, cist lay NW-SE and measured 1ft 2ins by 1ft 8 .5 ins by 1ft 4ins deep. It had been set in a pit 6ins wider than cist and interspace had been carefully packed with cobbles. The dimensions of cover slab are not known except that it is 2.5inches thick. When found, the cist was empty except for a little soil which had percolated in and had covered a heap of cremated bone, lying on the slightly dished floor. This proved on examination to be the remains of two young adults, possibly both female.
A S Henshall 1966.

The precise findspot was pointed out on the ground at NH 7373 9243 by Mr Donald MacKay (Cnoc na Moine, Reaquhar, Dornoch) who was present when the cists was discovered. The face of the gravel knoll has eroded further and the cist is destroyed.
Visited by OS (N K B) 2 December 1980.
