Full Description

NH79NW 12 748 976.

Centred at NH 748 976 is a settlement of three circular stone-walled huts (A-C).
'A' is set into a slight slope and measures c. 9.5m in diameter between centres of a poorly defined wall of which most of the NNW quarter is missing. A pile of stones abut the outside of the wall in the W. There are two gaps, one in the SSW and the other in the SE of which the latter seems more likely to be the entrance.
'B' is 7.5m in diameter internally. Most of the inner wall face is visible, but no outer face, although the wall thickness appears to be 1.1m splaying to 2.2m at the entrance in the SE. The entrance is flanked by two stones 1.5m apart.
'C' is c. 13.0m in diameter between the centres of a wall spread to 3.0m in which a few outer facing stones are visible. The S arc has been robbed to build a late field wall which skirts the hut. The entrance is not evident.
The only sign of contemporary cultivation is a couple of stone clearance heaps near 'A'. On the E the area is occupied by a 'depop' settlement and its fields.
Surveyed at 1/10,560.
Visited by OS (J M) 13 May 1975.
