Full Description

Bracken-clad strip cultivation.
Visited by OS (JM) 15 July 1980.

A rapid walkover survey of Loch Poll was carried out in 1998 by C.Dagg.

Site 11: Area of cultivation. On a south facing slope above a broad area of peat bog and backing onto a rocky knoll, is an area of grass, moss and bracken. From a vantage point on the other side of Loch na Loinne, a series of lines representing ditches or ridges can be clearly seen, running NE-SW or N-S and spaced maybe 10m. apart. These would seem to indicate that the area was used for cultivation rather than grazing. The possible footings of one rectangular structure are located in the south centre of the area, and low turf dykes form an enclosing boundary to the west. Scattered irregularly around the perimeter of the cultivated area are 9 small circular structures, measuring on average 1.5m. in diameter, not clearance cairns. These are possibly some form of food (potato?) storage structures. <1>
