Report 19 (site 15) - Archaeological Survey of a proposed Hydro Scheme at Loch Poll, Assynt, Sutherland. C Dagg, 01/12/98
Site 15: Dubharlainn, depopulated settlement. On a steep but grassy east facing slope, with trees at the water's edge. The settlement's buildings are 30-40m. Above the loch shore. The present enclosing dyke is well constructed with copestones, probably connected with the settlement's re-use for sheep farming activities. Traces of a presumably earlier stone and turf dyke can be seen higher than the present dyke to the west. There are four buildings and a sheepfank:
a) Sheepfank, rectangular, measuring approximately 6.5 by 7m.
B) Dwelling, aligned NE-SW with an entrance in its NW wall and fireplaces in both gables. It measures approximately 4m. By 2m. Internally. Behind its SW fireplace it shares a gable with the next building.
C) Dwelling, approximately 4m. By 2m. Internally with an entrance in its SW gable and dressed stone
D) Building, SSE of the two dwellings and at right angles to them, of much rougher construction and only 2.5m. In length internally. It joins onto the head dyke.
E) Building, 50m. ENE of this group, standing alone on a small knoll, aligned E-W with an entrance to the east, measuring 4m. By 2.m. <1>
