Full Description

Loinn Mhor. Footings of two buildings, 11m by 4m and 8m by 4m, with accompanying enclosure is bracken-clad pasture marked by occasional heaps of cleared stone, and a bounding bank taking in rough ground. Abandoned in the 19th century.
Visited by OS (JM) 15 July 1980.

A farmstead comprising two unroofed buildings and an enclosure, and a length of boundary wall are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet lix). Two unroofed buildings, an enclosure and a field wall are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1967).

Report 19 (site 16) - Archaeological Survey of a proposed Hydro Scheme at Loch Poll, Assynt, Sutherland. C Dagg, 01/12/98

Site 16: Loinn Mhor, depopulated settlement. A roughly oval enclosed area with two buildings aligned on a small rocky ridge running E-W. The eastern building measures 5.5m. By 1.5m., the western 4.8m. By 1.5m. Rubble piles further west along the ridge may represent the footings of other buildings. A dyke runs from the west corner of the eastern building to form a yard in front of the building then doglegs down to join the main enclosing dyke. At the water's edge, the base of the enclosing dyke is barely 2m. Above present water levels. <1>
