Full Description

NC71SE 28 7977 1194.

NC 7977 1192. A homestead consisting of two stone-walled hut-circles within an enclosing wall was found during field investigation on the level summit of a spur.
The huts lie about 5m apart with walls surviving as low, overgrown bands of rubble spread from 1.0-2.0m, and in each instance a slight depression in the WNW may indicate an entrance. The western hut, oval in shape, is the large and more robust in build; it is about 4.5m WSW-ENE by 4.0m internally. The other is circular about 3.5m internal diameter. A wall links their north arcs but becomes ill-defined at the west end; residual walling abuts the west side of the smaller enclosure. The enclosure wall, peat covered and standing to a maximum 0.2m seems to have delineated a roughly oval area about 37.0m N-S by 38.0m transversely though towards the SW end the wall has been overgrown by peat and its course can only be conjectured. A break in the wall in the ESE strongly suggests an entrance. The only indication of associated cultivation is the generally smooth, heather cropped appearance of the enclosed ground with, possibly,a field clearance heap just south of the two enclosures. Surveyed at 1:10,560.
