('A': NC 7993 6339 and 'B': NC 7993 6336) Enclosures (NR)
OS 6"map, (1963)
Two enclosures (A and B) found during field investigation on the flat top of a ridge. Visited by OS (W D J) 25 April 1960.
Of the two enclosures discovered by the previous field investigator, A is a hut circle 13.5m in diameter within a tumbled wall 0.4m high and about 1.4m estimated width. The position of the entrance is uncertain; the only breaks in the wall are where the modern fence crosses the hut in the NE and SE arcs.
The date and purpose of B cannot be deterimined. Superficially it resembles a hut about 9.0m in diameter within traces of a tumbled wall spread to 1.5m wide and 0.3m high, which is divided by a cross wall running N-S, but the west arc appears to be formed entirely of natural rock outcrop, and the two compartments either side of the cross wall are at different levels. They measure 8.5m by 5.5m and 8.0m by 3.5m. This structure may be a bi-partite homestead of early date (See NC76SE 7), but more likely it is an enclosure contemporary with the nearby minor deserted settlement. (NC76SE 36).
There is no evidence of a field system associated with the hut; later 18/19th century cultivation encroaches on the area.
Visited by OS (N K B) 28 June 1977.
