Full Description

A hut circle near the Caen Burn. Originally recorded by the OS as hut circle 'A' See MHG63874 for hut circle 'B'.

Situated on an east-facing slope slightly boggy in the northern part and rather rough and undulating in the south are two hut circles ('A' and 'B') surrounded by a rather poorly defined field system covering 5 hectares.
'A' at ND 0101 1829 is set onto the slope and is obscured by peat and heather. It measures internally about 6.5m SW-NW by 5.5m with the entrance in the SE. The wall is spread to 2m expanding to 3m around the built up NE arc.
'B' at ND 0116 1802 situated on a small shelf measures 7.2m N-S by 6m within a wall of 0.3m high and 1.6m wide, defined by a considerable number of inner and outer facing stones. The entrance is in S arc. The field system is limited to scattered stone clearance heaps, at best about 20m apart. No cultivation plots can be seen.
Surveyed at 1:10 560. Visited by OS (J B) 21 April 1976.

The hut circle is visible in vertical aerial photographs taken in 2023. <1>
