Description

An excavation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 at Rosemount Steading, Glenaldie, Tain. The works were completed as a condition of planning consent in regard the conversion and alterations to the existing building to form a residential dwelling. Whilst the layout of the main U-shaped Steading wass to be retained (recorded by photographic and building surveys - see EHG6261), the remains of an attached horse mill were to be demolished prior to the construction of a new drainage system. As such, a targeted excavation was carried out across the horse gin involving the excavation of a trench running perpendicular to the steading. This trench revealed a dressed stone machine pit with a stone-capped gully extending into the steading building. The gully was likely used to house the drive shaft for the horse gin. Little evidence of original machinery was present with the exception of stones with incised base plates located within the mechanism pit and interior of the gully. No further works were recommended prior to the onset of development. <1>
