EHG6015 - Trial trenching - new maturation warehouses, Tomatin Distillery

Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC Archaeology Group

Date

Feb 2023

Description

An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2023 in advance of the proposed construction of new maturation warehouses at Tomatin Distillery, near Inverness. The evaluation was required following a desk-based assessment (DBA) of the development area (see EHG5981) which indicated the presence of both prehistoric and post-medieval remains in the nearby area. Twelve trenches were excavated across the development area, which identified two field drains, indicative of past agricultural activity. No significant archaeological features or deposits were uncovered during the evaluation. Given the presence of multi-period archaeology in the immediate surrounding area, however, a watching brief was recommended during any topsoil stripping for initial site clearance. <1>
