EHG5864 - Walkover survey - proposed Limekilns Wind Farm

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Archaeology Services Ltd

Date

Feb & May 2020

Description

Two phases of walkover survey were undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2020 in advance of the first phase of development of a wind farm at Limekiln Estate, Reay, Caithness. The survey was undertaken in areas designated for development, however, much of the woodland was inaccessible and the surveys were limited to open areas between dense tree plantations. This was not so much the case in the north of the site where the access track cut across open farmland. Outwith the woodland the whole development corridor was surveyed. The survey identified 33 features. The sites identified and thought to be at risk were marked off before work on site started and these markers remain in place. Construction phase I of the project included clear felling of some forest areas and the subsequent creation and upgrading of access tracks and the creation of lay down areas. <1> <2> A third walkover survey was carried out following a re-design of the propsed scheme - see EHG Subsequent work included a watching brief during the construction phase - see EHG5865.
