EHG5780 - Metal detector survey - former Aluminium Lochaber Recreation Club site, Inverlochy
Technique(s)
Organisation
AOC Archaeology Group
Date
Nov 2019
Description
A metal detection survey was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2019 in respect to a proposed development on a land parcel northeast of Inverlochy. The site lies within Old Inverlochy Farm and to the immediate east of Inverlochy Castle, Fort William. It is also within the bounds of the demarcated areas for the Battles of Inverlochy. The metal detector survey was undertaken using Minelab x terra and Makro Racer 2 detectors (primary detector and smaller unit for detailed location). The metal detecting area was walked in overlapping 2 m wide transects to ensure that no areas were missed. As the survey area was relatively small, find spots were dug immediately upon discovery, and backfilled as soon as digging and recording of the find was complete. The survey produced no significant finds. It was apparent that the majority of the area had little in the way of surviving in-situ deposits. <1>
A watching brief was also carried out - see EHG5781.
